Room 20 Science Show Reflection

Our class had an assembly item to share with the whole school, and most of the class were dressed up as MAD SCIENTISTS. We put in a lot of work and some of us were nervous and shaky, but then they were relaxed when the hopped off stage.

ROOM 20 SCIENCE SHOW
reflection
6TH of June 2014 9:00 in the morning, our class had an assembly item for the school. It was about our universe and how it works. Our class wore their green ties and scientists cloaks. I grasped my scientist goggles and mustache to place on my head and face, then we trotted down to the hall where we rehearsed. We had some accidents with the speakers when Erin spoke through the microphone after Marcus asked the question about “Why do we have day and night”. Then a Fantail came out of nowhere, some of the kids were just staring at the Fantail then the kids up on stage. All the scientists were getting dressed into their cloaks ready for their part, then it was my turn to speak. The question our group chose was ‘why can’t we breathe in space?’.

I was feeling pretty nervous before we started, I was worrying about how I would react when it was my turn to talk in front of the whole school. My heart was beating fast like a cheetah, but then I didn't feel so nervous after I finished my line.

I was happy with my performance because I said my part very well and I didn't mess up or repeat words five times, or more.

I felt so proud of myself after I said my line because I said it clearly and in a loud enough voice. But I was mainly proud of myself because I got to hop off stage and get it done with.

I need to work on talking in front of the audience, looking at up instead of looking down at script but I would look if I forget a word or two, and try not to get so nervous.

Balloon rocket

Last week our class did a science experiment in room 15. We got given a piece of paper that had some stuff written down on it, we had to write down what we thought was going to happen before we did some science. I hope you enjoy! :)
Balloon Rocket!

Equipment:
  • 3 balloons (just incase if one or two of them pop)
  • 1 long piece of kite string (about 10-15 feet long)
  • Tape
  • 1 plastic straw

Method:

  1. Tie one end of the string to a chair, door knob, or the other support.
  2. Put the other end of the string through the straw.
  3. Pull the string tight and tie it to another support in the room.
  4. Blow up the balloon (don’t tie it.) Pinch the end of the balloon and tape the balloon to the straw shown below. Now you're ready to launch!
  5. Just let go of the end and watch it zoom off.
    Prediction
Zeb: The balloon will fly across the line.
Tyrone:The balloon will go across the line like a rocket and run out of oxygen or air in it and it will stop.
    Observation
Zeb: The balloon went zooming across the line.
Tyrone: The balloon flew across the string and got from one chair to the other.
    Explanation
Zeb: The air was pushing the balloon across the line.
Tyrone: The air or oxygen comes out of the balloon causing it to move the opposite direction of the end of the balloon.

Science: Boat or Submarine

Today (4/11/13), our class did a science experiment in room 20. We had to decide what kind of shape we would be doing for the experiment. Then when after we had created the shape with clay, we placed it into the water and counted the coins we placed into the clay and when it sunk we took 1 away from our count. For example: if I counted 7 coins and it sunk on the last coin I minus one coin which equals 6. I hope you enjoy reading this science experiment! :)
Question/Goal/ problem
Make a shape that will hold more than 11 coins

What shape of container will hold the most weight ?
We are choosing a pan because it is wide and the wider it is, the more water keeps it afloat

Hypothesis
It will be able to hold more than 5 coins.
Materials
Container filled with water, modelling clay, old coins

Method (What I did)
Create a boat out of modelling clay.
I Fill the container with water.
Place the boat carefully onto the water so it floats.
One at a time , put coins carefully into the boat . Count how many coins are in the boat before it sinks.

Observation/ Analyse
We made a pan and we got 5 coins in so that's pretty good we thought we needed the pan to be bigger.

Conclusion
It sank because it was probably tall and not wide enough. It floated because it was wide. The width and the length was about 44 cm wide.
Where are my eye balls!!

This is fun!

I rich! NOT

Science: Speedboat

Here is my Science report on a cardboard boat and a paper clip. This is all on how it floats and why. I hope you enjoy reading it. :)

Race a Speedboat
Can you make a paper boat race across the water just by gently touching the surface of the water?
Hypothesis (What I think will happen) The boat might sink because water might get on it causing it to shred to pieces.
Wrong!

Materials
Coloured card, washing up liquid, pencil or sharpie, scissors, large container of water.

Method (What we did)
  1. Filled a container with a bit of water.
  2. Poured some washing up liquid into the container.
  3. We cut a piece of cardboard into a boat.
  4. Now we place the boat into the water.
Observation (What happened)
Mr Severinson poured a bit of washing up liquid into the container. Marcus placed his cardboard boat into the water and nothing happened until Marcus put his finger in behind the boat and it went 10 cm away from where he dipped his finger in.

Conclusion (Why I think it happened)
The washing up liquid broke the surface tension making it weaker and the other end stronger, causing the boat to move when you place your finger into the water.

Short Experiment to Follow Up
Make Metal Float
Gently place a paperclip on the water’s surface.

Hypothesis (What I think will happen)
I think it might float because it’s light.
I was right about it floating but not about it being light?

Observation (What happened)
The paper clip floated when henry had his hand underneath but when he moved his hand away, the paper clip sunk.

Conclusion (Why I think it happened)

Because there was no hole or anything on the surface. If there was a hole in the water the paper clip will not float, dipping your hand in is causing to make a hole and the paper clip will only float when the surface is just flat.

Science:Does air have weight?

On the 29/10/13 our class did a science experiment on air and if it has a weight and it does. This is something on how air does have weight.  Hope you enjoy reading this. :)

Does air have weight?

Equipment: Ruler
                   2 newspapers, or one

Prediction: Q. Does air have weight?
No, air does not have weight because if it did, we would be carrying air.
A. Air does have weight, it weighs 15 pounds per square inch.

Observe: When Ollie karate chopped the ruler it didn’t break because nothing was on the end of it, Mr M got a piece of newspaper and scrunched it up and placed it on the ruler. This time the when Ollie karate chopped the ruler the ruler did not snap but the scrunched newspaper went into the air and floated down in 5 seconds. Mr M got newspaper and instead of screwing it up, he flattened it and placed it on top of the ruler. Now when Ollie karate chopped the ruler it snapped, why you say, well if you want to now read my explanation below.

Explain: The ruler broke because Mr M had flattened the newspaper , and while he was doing that air was coming out causing the air to push down onto the newspaper and the ruler would eventually break or snap. This sometimes failed because the newspaper wasn’t flattened enough.

Whoa, fascinating.

Fire the catapult!

Science experiment:air exists

On Monday 21st of October we did an science experiment on air and how it exists. Here is something our class did to prove air exists. I hope you have fun doing this science experiment! :)

  AIR EXISTS

Equipment:  Container  filled with H20 (water)
                    Jar
                    Paper towel

Predict: Will the paper stay dry? I think the paper won’t stay dry. Why? Because the paper will be in the bucket.

Observe: The paper was screwed up a bit and it got put in a jar and the person holding the jar would quickly tip the jar into the water upside down. When he brang it back up, the paper didn’t fall out and it was totally dry.

Explain: The paper was dry because the paper was touching the edges of the jar from the inside causing it to not fall out of the jar and how the paper was touching the edges were because you screwed it up a bit, but if you screwed it up heaps, it would fall out. Also, if you hadn't of quickly tipped the jar into the water upside down, water would have got into the jar causing the paper to get wet.
